Addressing an Ageing Workforce and Succession Planning through Business Capability Modelling
Background
An organisation sought to assess its digital maturity to understand how effectively it was leveraging digital tools and systems across its organisation processes. With increasing competition and the push for digital transformation, the leadership needed a clear view of its current digital integration to identify gaps and plan for future improvements. To visualise this assessment, the organisation used its existing Business Capability Model (BCM) to map digital maturity levels at the capability level, providing a single, consolidated view of its digital landscape.

Challenge
The organisation faced several challenges in evaluating its digital maturity:
- Inconsistent digital integration: Some organisation areas had adopted digital tools, while others continued to rely on manual processes, resulting in inconsistent operations.
- Fragmented digital efforts: Digital initiatives were being implemented in silos, without a cohesive strategy or clear understanding of how well these efforts supported core organisation capabilities.
- No clear visualisation of digital maturity: The organisation lacked a centralised way to view its digital maturity across all organisation functions, making it difficult to assess where improvements were needed.
- Pressure to innovate: Competitors were advancing in digital capabilities, increasing the pressure for the organisation to innovate and enhance its digital footprint.
The Digital Density Maturity Assessment was carried out to address these challenges, using the BCM to visualise digital maturity levels at a capability level.
Solution
The organisation utilised its existing BCM to conduct the Digital Density Maturity Assessment, mapping maturity levels for each capability. This provided a single-page view of the organisation’s digital maturity, enabling leadership to easily identify areas for improvement. Key steps in the process included:
- Mapping digital capabilities: The existing BCM was used to map the organisation’s current digital tools and platforms at a capability level. This showed how well each organisation capability was supported by digital solutions and where reliance on manual processes still existed.
- Assessing digital maturity: Each capability was assessed to determine its level of digital maturity, from basic digitisation to advanced integration. This maturity was mapped onto the BCM, providing a visual representation of the digital landscape on a single page.
- Identifying gaps and opportunities: The assessment revealed capabilities that were lagging in digital maturity and identified opportunities to enhance digital integration. Areas where manual processes could be automated and where analytics or IoT could provide added value were highlighted.
- Benchmarking against industry standards: The organisation’s digital maturity was compared to industry benchmarks, helping leadership understand how the organisation performed relative to competitors and identify areas that required immediate attention.
- Developing a digital roadmap: Based on the findings, a roadmap was created to guide the organisation’s digital transformation. The roadmap prioritised improvements in digital maturity for underperforming capabilities and laid out a strategy for long-term investment in advanced digital technologies.
Outcomes
The use of the BCM to visualise the Digital Density Maturity Assessment delivered several important outcomes:
- Single-page visualisation of digital maturity: By mapping digital maturity levels onto the BCM, the organisation gained a clear, consolidated view of its digital capabilities across all organisation functions, making it easier to prioritise improvements.
- Identification of digital gaps and opportunities: The assessment revealed areas where digital integration was lacking and identified opportunities to automate manual processes and implement advanced digital tools.
- Benchmarking against competitors: The maturity assessment provided valuable insights into how the organisation’s digital capabilities compared to industry standards, helping leadership make informed decisions about where to focus resources.
- Strategic digital roadmap: The roadmap provided a phased approach to enhancing digital maturity, outlining immediate improvements and long-term investments in technologies such as automation, data analytics, and IoT to support future growth.
